Bikkur Cholim literally means ‘visiting the sick’ in Hebrew.
The tradition of Bikkur Cholim goes back hundreds of years, and has been part and parcel of Jewish life where ever Jews lived.
The Bikkur Cholim Committee is the compassionate arm of the Jewish Center that reaches out to congregants who are ill, confined to their own home, in local hospitals, or in a nursing home. The members of the Bikkur Cholim committee bring a little cheer with a friendly visit. The members of the committee are always “on call.”
It is important that one call the Jewish Center office if they know of a member that is ill, confined to their own home, in a local hospital, or in a nursing home. The office staff will write the information down on a special Bikkur Cholim list. The rabbi, members of our professional staff and members of the Bikkur Cholim Committee read the list so that visits, calls and contact can be made.
When notified the rabbi can also offer a mishebeirakh (get well) prayer for the individual.
Participation is encouraged of both men and women to join the Bikkur Cholim Committee. Only an hour or two a week is a short time to spend to bring a little cheer with a friendly visit. Call the Center office for more information.

The many Tikkun Olam programs at the Jewish Center of Teaneck reflect the energy, enthusiasm and dedication of our membership.
Tikkun Olam means, “repairing the world” and we are G-d's partners in this responsibility. In the Pirkei Avot, Ethics of the Fathers, it is stated, “It is not your responsibility to complete the task of Tikkun Olam; however, it is your responsibility to participate in it.”
